Bride Of Chucky
I remember being 4 or 5 years old when I watched 'Bride Of Chucky' for the first time, I remember each scene that I would have to turn away in fear from and the scenes that shocked me so much to the point of fascination. Rewatching the movie as a teenager made me obsessed with the character of Tiffany Valentine. Bubbly, fashionable and hilarious, she's basically the gothic version of Barbie that we all need in our lives. I love the character so much that for Christmas 2018, my father bought me a Tiffany doll and she remains in her box to this day, one of my most prized possessions. Certain scenes in this movie are some of the most memorable scenes in horror for me, for example the iconic introduction, Tiffany's death scene, Tiffany's makeover from frumpy bride doll to the magnificent blonde doll we love to see.Tiffany is introduced to us as Chucky's lover who has an obsession with murder and an eye for the more deadlier things life has to offer. She is the holy grail of the entire movie. Throughout the movie, we see Tiffany as a vicious yet fashion-savvy villain that you want to root for without thinking twice about it. You want her to have the happy ending that she so rightly deserves despite the fact that she mercilessly killed a couple by throwing a champagne bottle at a ceiling mirror that sliced them to pieces and cut open their water bed which mixed the water with the blood, quite literally causing a blood bath. From her hopeless romantic mindset to her unforgiving, remorseless ways of killing people, she's the perfect anti-hero for horror fans everywhere. Jennifer Tilly pulls off playing the sassy and sadistic killer perfectly, I couldn't imagine anybody else playing the role of Tiffany.
Tiffany wears a beautiful white wedding dress with a black leather jacket and black boots. The combination of something as pure as a wedding dress and a dark rock'n'roll jacket speaks volumes about Tiffany's bold fashion choices. The fact that she pulls off such a daring outfit is a talent because nobody else would be able to wear a wedding dress with a biker jacket and look beautiful whilst doing so. Her golden 'Tiff' necklace is the perfect accessory to compliment her outfit so effortlessly, it's simple yet makes a spectacular statement. Tiffany's entire outfit shows how unafraid the character of Tiffany is to stand out from the crowd. Her blonde hair, green eyes and pale skin contrasting with her dark eye makeup and gothic attire secures her title as most fashionable horror movie villain. Her makeover scene that gave us the iconic line "Barbie, eat your heart out." made me who I am today. Her unpredictable nature and sense of humour is what makes Tiffany the horror legend that she is, her looks are the bow that ties everything beautifully together.
A hopeless romantic with a lust for murder, Tiffany is the perfect lover for Chucky. Tiffany is a blonde bombshell. Her love for Chucky is what got her entangled in the world of schemes and murder in the first place however she doesn't care about the consequences of her actions as long as she gets what she wants, no matter how dangerous or risky the situation is. She thinks with her heart and not her head, and all that her heart truly desires is happiness, if that means she has to severely mutilate a few people along the way, then what's wrong with that? With talents like voodoo, doll customisation and killing people, there's no reason why she doesn't deserve to be crowned the queen of murder.
Bride Of Chucky is set one month after 'Child's Play 3' despite 'Bride Of Chucky' coming out seven whole years after it. The movie begins with Tiffany bribing a police officer into giving her Chucky's mutilated doll parts that have all been butchered, and once she has what she wants, she kills the naive poilceman as she walks away while 'Living Dead Girl' by Rob Zombie begins to play - I could swear that song was MADE for Tiffany. The opening credits then show Tiffany's humble abode, with dolls everywhere and newspaper clippings with headlines such as "Killer finally dead", "Serial killer Fatally Shot", "Serial Killer Charles Lee Ray Gunned Down In Chicago Toy Store" and "Boy Claims Doll Possessed By Killer's Soul". Tiffany is then brought on screen again, going through a chest of broken dolls and stitching Chucky back together and fixing him up. Once she is done, Chucky's new look is revealed, which is much more frightening than what we saw in the previous Child's Play movies, he has stitches across his face and scars, I don't even know what to say about his hair because it's just a mess, his piercing blue eyes are more menacing than ever, with one of them being bloody and his facial expression isn't friendly. His blue 'Good Guy' overalls have some tears on them too.
We see the human side to Tiffany when she tells Chucky about how excited she is to marry him and when he tells her the harsh reality about why he had the engagement ring in his possession, she cries herself to sleep... Next to the dead body of the Marilyn Manson wannabe that Chucky killed. Despite her violent and malicious tendencies, her wanting something as authentic as a marriage shows that she still wants some normalcy and simplicity in her life. Her romantic beliefs are unfairly mocked by Chucky who laughs maniacally at her, in an attempt to make her feel humiliated for wanting the man who she kills for to reciprocate her feelings completely. Chucky's evil nature and Tiffany's drive makes them the most 'killer' couple in horror.
The soundtrack consists of timeless hits from artists such as Rob Zombie, Blondie, Slayer and Motörhead. The most defining song from the movie being of course Rob Zombie's 'Living Dead Girl' which I believe to be the most perfect intro song choice that the editors could have chosen for the film. It effortlessly compliments the scene where Tiffany is stitching Chucky back together in her home with newspaper clippings about Charles Lee Ray (Chucky's human soul) around her and mismatched doll pieces. The song is sung from a male's point of view about a woman who has 'an insatiable love for the dead' with creepy and confusing lyrics, this song is the perfect introduction for our beloved Tiffany who has a love for horror and the more grislier things in life. The song can be interpreted in many ways, as Rob Zombie is known for his genius yet baffling lyrics. I am aware that he probably didn't write the song about Tiffany, however when I hear it, I can't help but think of her.
During the iconic makeover scene where Tiffany transforms herself from a dowdy, dark haired bride doll into the blonde bombshell that we all know and love, the song 'Call Me' by Blondie plays. The scene begins with the camera panning across her makeup table and a box of blonde hair dye prominently standing out, indicating that Tiffany is about to dye her hair blonde and become the bitch that we love to see. Most of the makeup products on the table are black (The lipstick, nail varnish, mascara) because Tiffany wouldn't be Tiffany without her gothic look. In the scene, we see Tiffany painting her nails black, applying dark, vampy eye makeup and dark lipstick, fitting into her heavy black boots and black leather jacket (which compliments the wedding dress she keeps on from her former appearance as a doll), putting on her extremely significant 'Tiff' necklace, and smoking a cigarette by the end of the makeover as she says "Barbie, eat your heart out.", which is perfect because Tiffany truly is Barbie's worst nightmare. It isn't normal to be envious of a murderous dolls beauty but here I am, being envious!
Jennifer Tilly does not get the appreciation that she deserves for being able to bring such a devious and deceitful character to life whilst being able to coax the viewer into rooting for her. Tiffany is not Chucky's accomplice, she is a leader in her own right. I can imagine it to be quite difficult to carry on a franchise with movies that try to live up to the original, but 'Bride Of Chucky' completely overshadows the earlier movies in the 'Child's Play' franchise I believe. This movie brought a sense of humour and quirkiness that the franchise was yet to see. 'Bride Of Chucky' was the kick in the teeth that the world of horror movies needed, it completely changed the game for the franchise with multiple pop culture references throughout the movie, memorable scenes such as Tiffany getting electrocuted in the bathtub by Chucky and the most hard-hitting soundtrack in all of horror. The movie was bound to be successful. I can confidently say that this movie is the best from the whole series. The fact that they didn't bring back Andy was a bold risk that I'm thankful they took because having the same victim can be quite tiresome (NOT Sidney Prescott from 'Scream' though), and it was exciting to watch a new cast and be introduced to new characters.
